Here
is a strong recommendation for folks looking for a trout or steelhead
fishing experience. I’ve fished with Jim Pettis many times over the
years and have many good memories from those trips.
Jim fishes lower
Sacramento River
out of
Redding
and occasionally the
Trinity River
. Most trips start out in his custom built
drift boat to float fish these productive waters. I can tell you first
hand that the lower Sac is filled with large aggressive rainbow and at
times steelhead and Jim knows where they are. The most productive method
he will show you is fishing an indicator with a slack line dead drift. You
can fish it anyway you want of course but this is deadly. I’ve fished
without the indicator and had lots of fun too. But whatever you do, ask
him to demonstrate casting the indicator rig. His technique is one of a
kind.
The water level will often determine
where you launch. Most of the time he will work to get you away from the
crowds. The upper most section up by Keswick Dam is a section where I have
never encountered another boat when I’ve fished with Jim…and that
seems to be where the bigger fish are and where you might fish too.
Jim will tie flies streamside too and
has several Umqua patterns to his credit he is happy to show you how to
tie. Perhaps the most lethal being the Pettis unreal egg. He also uses
indicators that he hand ties that are very ingenious.
They can moved up or down the leader to adjust the depth .
You may stop along the way and anchor
up on an island mid river and wade fish. When you come back to the boat
you might just find a table and chairs setup up with lunch prepared and
waiting for you. No violin music …yet.
Oh yeah, the best thing is he will
fish you into the ground. We have always fished long hours and need
flashlights to unload the boat.
So tell him I sent you. Have fun . Oh
yeah…don’t forget to laugh at all his corny jokes…sorry Jim!
